The Godfather for Xbox 360
Electronics Arts finally released the Xbox 360 version of The Godfather this month. (The game was originally released on last-generation consoles, including the Xbox, in March 2006.)
The Godfather is a sandbox game (ala: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City) set in Mario Puzo's violent vision of 1940's New York City. Playing through the story missions in the game, you are able to re-enact a number of scenes from the The Godfather movies, including the death of Luca, Sonny's bloody "typewriter" assassination and the horse's head in the bed. Without exception, the story missions were well-crafted and fun -- none of them felt like busy work -- a problem found any many sandbox games.
"This is a dangerous neighborhood. You could use some protection."
One of the cooler parts of the game is territory acquisition gameplay. This is a free-roaming part of the game where you take over territory by extorting business owners for protection money and take over various rackets for which the businesses act as fronts. You can employ a number of tactics to intimidate a shop owner: you can simply talk to them (if your reputation is high enough that's all that's necessary), you can hit them, grab them and shake them up, destroy their property, assault customers, destroy their window displays, etc. Each shopkeeper has a method of intimidation that they are weak to and finding that weak spot will earn you additional respect and a bigger stake in the business. You can also push a business owner too far -- then they'll fight back and can't be convinced by any means to come under your protection.
Your goal in all this (in addition to increasing your income and reputation) is to take over each of five territories: Little Italy, Brooklyn, New Jersey, Hell's Kitchen and Midtown. Each of these territories is initially controlled by one of the Five Families: The Corleones, Tartaglias, Straccis,
The game has an RPG aspect where various character attributes can be built up through the course of the game.
